Presentation of Pozo Alcón

The municipality of Pozo Alcón (5,165 inhabitants in 2013; 13,861 ha; municipal website) is located 130 km south-east of Jaén, on the border with the Province of Granada. The municipality is made of the town of Pozo Alcón and of the village of El Fontanar (453 inhabitants).

Pozo Alcón was first mentioned in 1331, as Pocuelo, an uninhabited place part of Cazorla. After the conquest of Granada, the area, known as El Pozo de Campo Cuenca, was progressively settled. In 1579, the estate counted 80 households and another 60 in the neighborhood. Pozo Alcón was granted the status of villa on 12 July 1648 by Philip IV, separating from Quesada.

Symbols of Pozo Alcón

The flag of Pozo Alcón (photo, photo, photo) is horizontally divided blue-red-green with three white stars forming an arch in the upper stripe and the municipal coat of arms in the central stripe.

The coat of arms of Pozo Alcón is prescribed by a Decree adopted on 30 March 2000 by the Municipal Council, signed on 13 April 2000 by the Mayor, and published on 27 May 2000 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 62, p. 8,238 (text).
The coat of arms, which does not appear to have been officially registered, is described as follows:

Coat of arms: Our coat of arms is made of three quarters. In its upper half appears the image of a flying hobby. In the lower quarter, divided into two parts, appears left an "Archbishop's Cross" and right the figure of a bull on a green pasture, digging out the soil from which an abundant source gushes forth (Description of a legend reported in a book on Pozo Alcón) [pozo means "a well" in Spanish].
