Presentation of Villablanca

The municipality of Villablanca (2,881 inhabitants in 2015; 9,800 ha; municipal website) is located 60 km west of Huelva.

Villablanca was established after the Christian reconquest, as La Puebla de Santa María de la Blanca. The tradition says that the chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Blanca was erected by a farmer who had captured a white dove on an olive tree. On his way home, the farmer noticed that the dove had escaped; he caught it again on the very same place, but the bird escaped once again. Back to the original site, the farmer could not see the dove but a statue of the Blessed Virgin, white (blanca) as her messenger, the dove. The villagers soon understood that the Virgin expected them to build a chapel there, which was done.
The modern town of Villablanca was built in the 16th century according to a grid pattern, unique in the Province of Huelva, centered on the main square (today, Plaza de la Constitución) of 800 sq. m in area.

Symbols of Villablanca

The flag of Villablanca, adopted on 13 January 1982 by the Municipal Council, does not appear to have been officially registered yet.
The flag is described as follows:

Flag: Three parallel stripes parallel to the hoist, the first, celestial blue, the second, white, and the third, green. Charged in the center with the local coat of arms.

Juan José Antequera proposed on 22 June 1996 a flag in proportions 11 x 18, grass green mantled and bordered in green; charged in the center with the local coat of arms.
The arms were designed from scratch by Joaquín González Moreno, crowned by a Marquis' coronet that was turned down by the Royal Academy of History. Previous arms adopted on 15 May 1948 by the Municipal Council, featured "the chapel seen on its main side and in its upper part the crown of the old Marquisate of Astorga".
