Presentation of Turón

The municipality of Turón (330 inhabitants in 2007; 5,500 ha; municipal website) is located in the Alpujarra Mountains, 150 km south-east of Granada.
In the Roman times, Turón was the mining colony of Turobriga; the local lead mines were abandoned long ago. Turón was one of the few villages where the Moriscos did not commit violence against their Christian neighbours, and even protected them, during the Alpujarra revolt (late 16th century); this noble gesture did not prevent them from being slaughtered by troops sent by King Philip II. The village was subsequently resettled by Christian colonists from all over Spain.

Symbols of Turón

The flag and arms of Turón, adopted on 15 April 2009 by the Municipal Council and submitted on 20 April 2009 to the Directorate General of the Local Administration, are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 4 May 2009 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 2 June 2009 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 104, pp. 49-50 (text).
The flag is described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular flag, in proportions 2:3, made of two equal stripes, the upper red and the lower green, with a vertical stripe placed along the hoist and covering 1/3 of the flag's length, yellow with a black polecat's head.
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1. Argent a polecat gules, 2a. Or a sledgehammer and a hammer sable crossed per saltire, 2b. Vert a tree argent. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The polecat (turón), common in this part of the Alpujarra Mountains and the village's namesake, makes the arms canting. The tools represent the lead mines exploited from the Roman times until 1973. The tree represents olives and figs, whose cultivation was facilitated by the introduction of irrigation and ploughing by the Romans; the local figs were famous at the time for their sweetness.
