Presentation of Huéneja

The municipality of Huéneja (1,193 inhabitants in 2014; 11,669 ha; municipal website) is located 90 km east of Granada, on the border with the Province of Almería. The municipality is made of the town of Huéneja and of the villages of La Huertezuela, Las Cuevas and Los Olivos. The inhabitants of Huéneja are known as Loberos (wolf hunters), recalling that the villagers were once experts in wolf hunting and taught their art to shepherds.

Huéneja developed around a Muslim fortress, Boabdil stayed there from the 27 September to the 3 October 1490. After the Christian reconquest, Huéneja was granted in 1491 to Álvaro de Bazán: on 20 June 1492, the domain was transferred by the Catholic Monarchs to Rodrigo de Vivar y Mendoza, as a reward for his support during the Granada War.

Symbols of Huéneja

The flag and arms of Huéneja, adopted on 6 February 1992 by the Municipal Council and validated on 5 February 1993 by the Royal Academy of History, are prescribed by Decree No. 48, adopted on 20 April 1993 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 31 May 1993 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 58, p. 4,916 (text). This was confirmed by a Decree adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3, made of five vertical stripes in proportions 1/5, 1/10, 2/5, 1/10 and 1/5, the two outer stripes green, the intermediate stripes white and the central stripe red.
Coat of arms: Argent eight roundels gules mantelé gules charged dexter with a wolf passant argent and sinister with an Arab castle of the same masoned sable. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The wolf recalls the nickname of the inhabitants of Huéneja. The castle represents the old fortress, today ruined. The roundels symbolize the eight municipalities that form the Marquisado de Zenete district.
