Presentation of El Viso

The municipality of El Viso (3,087 inhabitants in 2013; 10,352 ha; municipal website) is located on the border with the Province of Ciudad Real (Castilla-La Manca), 90 km north of Córdoba.

The festival known as "Auto Sacramental de los Reyes Magos" (Sacramental Performance of the King Magi) has been declared a "Festival of Touristic Interest in Andalusia" on 11 March 1999 by the Government of Andalusia. The festival dates back, at least, to 1835. Due to its success, the periodicity of the festival has been reduced from 7 to 4 years. The text used in the today's performances is a dramatic poem called Infancia de Jesús (Jesus' Childhood), written by Gaspar Fernández y Avila, parish priest in Colmenar (Province of Málaga). The performance involves more than 100 inhabitants of the town, including a choir and dancers. The scene is the village's square (c. 1,800 sq. m).

El Viso is the residence of the painter and sculptor Aurelio Teno Teno (b. 1927), famous for his "jewels-sculptures" and "sculptures-paintings" related to pop art. Teno was awarded in 1966 the Diamonds International Prize, considered as the Nobel Prize in jewellery, and, in 1970, the Golden Medal in the Munich World Fair. Teno started monumental sculpture in 1976, when he won the contest for the Don Quixote sculpture (7 m in height, made of 60 tons of bronze and stone) of the Kennedy Center in Washington.

Symbols of El Viso

The flag of El Viso is diagonally divided celestial blue-white with the municipal logo in the center.
The logo shows the tower of the parish church, built in the 16th century, as the antonomastic symbol of the town, therefore allowing a very rapid identification of the place. The bridge, locally considered as "Roman", is a symbol of the history of El Viso, recalling that the village emerged in a strategic place at the confluence of the Córdoba-Almadén road and of the trail of Cabeza del Buey (Oxen's Head), which connected Hinojosa del Duque with Torremilano (today, Dos Torres). The star is a symbol of the "Auto Sacramental de los Reyes Magos", the cultural performance that made the fame of El Viso.
