The municipality of Santibáñez el Bajo (756 inhabitants in 2019; 4,615 ha; municipal website) is located 100 km north of Cáceres.
Santibáñez el Bajo is named for Latin Sancti Ohoannes, St. John. The villge was part of the Kingdom of León, depending on the Community of the Town and Land of Granada (a depopulated place of Granadilla).
In the first half of the 19th century, Santibáñez el Bajo was the den of the emblematic band of rascals self-styled Los Muchachos de Santibáñez. The band was mostly composed of former guerillas of the War of Independence who were not rewarded as promised; at a time where no collective structure (political parties, unions) existed to vehicle social protest, those bands appeared as primitive challengers of the pre-capitalistic system. Rabidly opposed to both absolutism and liberalism, Los Muchachos de Santibáñez are considered by some historians as the forerunners of the anarchist movements in Extremadura. Supported by the local lower classes, the rebels were severely repressed, especially in Santibáñez, being sentenced to death, jailing for the rest of their life, and huge fines.

The flag and arms of Santibáñez el Bajo, adopted on 30 March and 29 December 1994 by the Municipal Council and validated on 8 November 1994 and 7 March 1995 by the Assessing Council of Honors and Distinctions of the Government of Extremadura, are prescribed by an Order issued on 7 April 1995 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 20 April 1995 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 46, pp. 1,454-1,455 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:
Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3. Composed of five horizontal stripes in proportions 1:6, 1:6, 1:3, 1:6 and 1:6, the outer yellow, the intermediate green, and the central white.
Coat of arms: Vert a lamb argent on a book gules closed by seven seals bearing a standard argent charged with a cross gules. A bordure or inscribed "EST IOANNES NOMEN EIUS" [His Name is John]. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.
The flag in use (photo) is charged with the municipal coat of arms.
