Presentation of Mirabel

The municipality of Mirabel (660 inhabitants in 2019 vs. 2,236 in 1960; 4,930 ha; municipal website) is located 70 km north of Cáceres and 30 km south-east of Plasencia.

Mirabel was often mentioned in medieval sources, but only as a fortress. The settlement is not documented before the 18th century. In the 12th century, following the Christian reconquest of the area and the re-settlement of Plasencia, Alfonso VIII transferred the fortress to the crown. Seized by the Almohads, the fortress was reconquered by the king, who subsequently used it to keep a garrison.
Mirabel belonged to the District of Plasencia until Pedro de Zúñiga took control of the village and initiated the struggle for independence. Francisco de Zúñiga was granted in 1488 the domain and fortress of Mirabel. In 1535, Charles I erected Fadrique de Zúñiga y Sotomayor Marquess of Mirabel and granted the status of villa to the place.
The 13th Marchioness of Mirabel (2001) is Alejandra Falcó y Girod.

Flag of Mirabel

The flag and arms of Mirabel, adopted on 15 April 1994 and 25 April 1995 by the Municipal Council and validated on 7 March and 17 October 1995 by the Assessing Council of Honors and Distinctions of the Government of Extremadura, are prescribed by an Order issued on 6 November 1995 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 14 November 1995 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 133, pp. 4,808-4,809 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3. Composed of a green panel with a black diagonal stripe outlined in white, running from the hoist's upper angle to the fly's lover angle.
Coat of arms: Argent a bend sable cantonned by a castle vert in chief and three spikes of the same in base. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The arms are based on the well-known arms of the Zúñiga y Sotomayor, "Argent a bend sable orled by a chain or".
