The municipality of Ceclavín (1,840 inhabitants in 2019 vs. 5,378 in 1950: 15,900 ha; municipal website) is located 80 km north-west of Cáceres.
Ceclavín was established from scratch in 1184 as a dependency of Coria, to be transformed in 1257 in a commandery of the Order of Alcántara.
The local tradition says that the town was named for the Latin toponym "cell-vini", "a wine cellar". another explanation refers to the Arab word "siglabiyin", "a slaves' camp", a name alluding to the alleged settlement of the area by slaves coming from Coria.
Ceclavín was granted the status of villa on 25 September 1537.

The flag of Ceclavín (photo,
photo), adopted on 31 October 1997 by the Municipal Council and validated on 17 February 1998 by the Assessing Council of Honors and Distinctions of the Government of Extremadura, are prescribed by an Order issued on 10 March 1998 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 16 April 1998 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 42, pp. 2,811-2,812 (text).
The flag is described as follows:
Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3. Composed of two horizontal bretessed stripes on, proportions 1:3 and 2:3, the upper blue and the lower white. Charged in the center with the coat of arms in full colors.
The coat of arms of Ceclavín, adopted on 28 February 1997 by the Municipal Council and validated on 16 July 1997 by the Assessing Council of Honors and Distinctions of the Government of Extremadura, is prescribed by an Order issued on 5 November 1997 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 22 November 1997 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 136, pp. 8,112-8,113 (text).
The coat of arms is described as follows:
Coat of arms: Quarterly, 1. Azure a wall argent charged with two Crosses of Alcántara vert, 2. Argent a lion rampant gules, 3. Argent a pillory gules, 4. Azure a bunch of grapes or. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.
The wall recalls the fortifications erected after the Portuguese uprising in 1647. The cross recalls that the town was ruled by the Order of Alcántara. The lion represents the Kingdom of León.
