Presentation of Conquista de la Sierra

The municipality of Conquista de la Sierra (185 inhabitants in 2019 vs. 788 in 1940; 4,177 ha) is located 70 km east of Cáceres and 20 km south-east of Trujillo.

Conquista, originally known as La Zarza, was the site of the domain and manor of Captain Gonzalo Pizarro (1446-1522), the father of the four conquistadors Francisco (1475-1541, conqueror and governor of Peru; erected Marquess without denomination), Hernando (1504-1580; Governor of Cuzco), Juan Pizarro (1511-1536), and Gonzalo Pizarro (1510-1548; Governor of Quito).
Hernando was the only of the four brothers who came back to Spain. Jailed for 20 years in the castle of La Mota, he married his cousin Francisca Pizarro Yupanqui (1534-1598), the daughter of Francisco Pizarro and Inés Huaylas Yupanqui (1518-1559).
Hernando's nephew, Juan Hernando de Pizarro, was erected 1st Marquess of La Conquesta in 1629. Accordingly, La Zarza was renamed to La Conquesta, subsequently shortened to Conquesta.

The flag and arms of Conquista de la Sierra, adopted on 27 January 1996 by the Municipal Council and validated on 9 July 1996 by the Assessing Council of Honors and Distinctions of the Government of Extremadura, are prescribed by an Order issued on 18 July 1996 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 13 August 1996 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 94, pp. 4,305-4,306 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Quadrangular, in proportions 2:3. Composed of a white panel with a green border, in width 1:5 of the hoist. Charged in the center with the municipal coat of arms in full colors.
Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. Argent a grill sable 2. Or a holly oak vert fructed or the trunk wrapped by a bramble sable and surrounded by two bears rampant of the same. A bordure vert inscribed in base 'AD 1.629' argent. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The grill recalls the martyr of St. Lawrence, the village's patron saint.
The oak and the bears are taken from the arms of the Pizarro lineage. The bramble (zarza) recalls the original name of the village. 1529 is the year of erection of the Marquisate of Conquesta de la Sierra.
