Introduction

The municipality of Cambre (22,900 inhabitants in 2008; 4,074 ha) is located in north-western Galicia, 12 km south-east of A Coruña.

"La Ópinion A Coruña," 19 March 2009, reports that the Decree of the Government of Galicia approving the flag and arms of Cambre was published in the Galician official gazette on 18 March 2009.

On 29 November 2007, the Municipal Council of Cambre unanimously submitted to the Heraldry Commission the reestablishment of the original municipal coat of arms, which had been replaced in the 1990s by a logo derived from the arms, together with a proposal of municipal flag.

Description

The flag of Cambre, as designed with the help of the Heraldry Commission, is white with a pine fructed proper in the middle, surrounded by two scallops outlined in blue.

Coat of Arms

The arms of Cambre are:

"Azure a pine proper on a terrace vert all outlined argent surrounded by two scallops of the same. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed."

A first proposal had the field argent instead of azure. The design of the crown recalls that Cambre was granted the title of "Villa" by King Alfonso XIII.

The scallops recall that Cambre was once located on the "Camino Inglés" (English Trail), by which pilgrims from Northern Europe and, especially, Britain, came to Santiago. Before the foundation of A Coruña, the pilgrims landed in the port of Burgo del Faro. At the end of the river Faro, the Knights Templars founded a commandery, in a place known today as O Templo and the biggest parish of Cambre (8,499 inh. vs. 6,908 inh. for the parish of Cambre proper).
