Presentation of Hoyales de Roa

The municipality of Hoyales de Roa (238 inhabitants in 2009; 1,278 ha; municipal website) is located 100 km of Burgos.

Hoyales de Roa appeared in the 10th century when Gonzalo Fernández decided to resettle the Duero no man's land (tierras de nadie), once the buffer zone between the Christian and Muslim states. Hoyales was among the 19 small villages forming the Community of the Village and Land of Haza.
On 18 April 1232, Pedro Garcíez, lord of Haza, bequeathed Ogialis (Hoyales) and Fontealexandro (Fuentelisendo) to his son, Gonzalo de Pedro, Abbot of Husillos (Palencia), who eventually transferred the villages to the abbey. His brother and new lord of Haza, Pedro Gonzá:lez de Marañón, disputed the donation; on 7 November 1276, the Royal Court of Valladolid validated the donation to the abbey.
In 1311, Hoyales was made a villa by King Ferdinand IV. In 1506, Philip I sold Hoyales, Fuentelisendo and La Ventosilla to Francisco de Zúñiga y Avellaneda, the sale being completed only in 1510.

Symbols of Hoyales de Roa

The flag and arms of Hoyales de Roa (municipal website) are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 1 February 2002 by the Municipal Council, signed the same day by the Mayor, and published on 13 February 2002 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 31, p. 2,218 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular. Horizontally divided in the middle, yellow and red. In the middle of the flag is placed the municipal coat of arms.
Coat of arms: Gules arms of Castile each tower ensigned with a five- pointed star argent. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown closed.

The municipal administration keeps an old and partially blurred seal whose heraldic meaning and symbolic are difficult to understand. It might include an old coat of arms with the writing "LA VILLA DE OYALES". The National Archives keep another, oval seal with the writing "ALCALDIA DE OYALES" and a tower with three crenellations surmounted with three stars.
The flag uses the national colors, red and yellow.
