Introduction

The municipality of Orozko (2,336 inhabitants; 102.42 sq. km) is located in the south-east of the Province of Vizcaya (Bizkaia), 24 km from Bilbao, on the border with the Province of Álava (Araba). The municipal territory of Orozko is made of 11 valleys and subvalleys, part of the Gorbea National Park, created by the Basque Government in 1994.

In the XIII-XIVth century, Orozko was defended by a castle that belonged to the Abendaño family, which was allied to the Gamboinos, themselves competing with the Oñacinos for the rule over Vizcaya. The castle was destroyed in 1357 on the order of the Lord of Vizcaya. Until 1785, the valley of Orozko had an administrative status unique in Vizcaya. Following the marriage in the XIIth century of Lady Alberta Sánchez of Orozko with the Lord of Ayala, Orozko belonged to the Lord of Ayala. On 2 April 1785, Orozko was eventually reincorporated into the General Board of Vizcaya.

Spanish vexillologist Juan José González, the flag designer, writes to me to explain that "Orozko" is the name both in Basque and in Spanish (not Orosco).

Description

The adoption of the municipal emblems of Orozko was reported by "Radio Ayala" on 24 June 2008. The symbols were designed by Juan José González, already the designer of some 30 local flags. The flag, based on the municipal coat of arms, "Argent a cross vert cantonned with four beasts gules," is white with a red cross forming four quarters diagonally divided red-white.
