Presentation of Puebla de la Calzada

The municipality of Puebla de la Calzada (5,914 inhabitants in 2017; 1,425 ha; municipal website) is located 40 km east of Badajoz and 5 km south of Montijo.

Puebla de la Calzada originates in Aldea del Rubio, a hamlet established on the bank of river Guadiana after the reconquest of the area by Alfonso IX in 1230 and its transfer to the Order of Saint James. Aldea del Rubio is mentioned in a document signed in 1276 by Alfonso X and in a privilige granted in 1327 by Master Vasco Rodríguez de Cornago to the Council of Mérida, quoted by Bernabé Moreno de Vargas in his History of the Town of Mérida (1633) as "Aldea del Rubio (which is La Puebla).
In the last years of the 14th century, Master Lorenzo Suarez de Figueroa established a new settlement close to the old Roman road (calzada) that connected Mérida to Lisbon.
On 8 May 1580, Philip II removed Puebla de la Calzada from the domains of the Order and sold it to Pedro Portocarrero, 2nd Marquis of Villanueva del Fresno, who transferred the village to the domain of Montijo, founded in 1550 and made a County in 1599 by Philip II.

The flag (photo, photo, photo) and arms of Puebla de la Calzada, adopted on 11 November 2004 by the Municipal Council and validated on 21 April 2005 by the Assessing Council of Honors and Distinctions of the Government of Extremadura, are prescribed by an Order adopted on 28 April 2005 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 21 May 2005 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 56, pp. 6,925-6,926 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3. Celestial blue panel. At hoist, three equal vertical stripes, red, green and yellow, the whole covering 1/7 of the flag's length. Charged in the center with the municipal coat of arms, in height 3/5 of the flag's width.
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1a. Vert a fess or masoned sable, 1b. Argent a Cross of the Order of Saint James, 2. Azure three eight-pointed stars argent in base waves argent. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The representation of the Roman road in the first quarter makes the arms canting. The Cross of Saint James recalls the origin of the town. The waves symbolize river Guadiana.
