Presentation of Malpartida de la Serena

The municipality of Malpartida de la Serena (556 inhabitants in 2019 vs. 2,228 in 1950; 2,753 ha) is located 140 km east of Badajoz and 10 km south-west of Castuera.

Malpartida de la Serena was already settled in the Roman times, as evidenced by funerary flagstones subsequentlmy re-used to build houses. There was probably here a vicus (village) depending on the neighboring town of Iulipa (Zalamea de la Serena).
After the Christian reconquest, Malpartida de la Serena was re-settled in 1256 by García de Barrantes, Grand Master of the Order of Alcántara, as a hamlet depending of Benquerencia, part of the Priorate of Magacela.
Ortiz de Thovar believes that the village was named either after a knight Malpartida or to recall a local knight that left the village to join Alfonso X the Wise in the Andalusian wars and was soon killed - therefore had "badly started" / mal partido.
Malpartida de la Serena was granted the status of villa on 1 November 1610 by Philip III, separating from Castuera.

Flag of Malpartida de la Serena

The flag (photo) and arms of Malpartida de la Serena, adopted on 25 January 1995 by the Municipal Council and validated on 17 May 1995 by the Assessing Council of Honors and Distinctions of the Government of Extremadura, are prescribed by an Order issued on 23 May 1995 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 8 June 1995 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 67, pp. 2,679-2,680 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3, horizontally divided in the middle red over blue, charged in the center with the municipal coat of arms in full colors.
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1. Azure a pallet serrated argent surrounded by two sirens of the same, 2a. Gules a bend or engulfed by two dragon's heads vert langued gules, 2b. Argent a cross flory vert. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The upper part of the shield forms a nice rebus of the town's name. In Spanish, "Per pale" reads partido, so here the fuzzy pallet refers to a "per bad pale", mal partido. The two sirens (Spanish, sirenas) are an "approximation" of Serena.
