Description

Yellow flag with a black eagle's head as high as 2/7 of the flag's height, centred on the first (hoist) third of the flag. The remaining two thirds of the flag show three rows and six columns of red lozenges. Ratio 2:3.

Almost a banner of the arms (blazoned per pale Gules on a bend Or an eagle's head Sable, and lozengy Or and Gules). The eagle's head is part of the Balenyà family arms and the lozengy field is the arms of the Centelles family, former lords of the municipality. Flag adopted 23th September 1999. Source for image and text: Fluvià 2001. The flag image in this source does not follow the official description: the eagle's head is depicted grey instead of black and the hoist stripe is much thinner than a third of the length.

I wonder if there is any connection with the traditional French province of Angoumois which has a banner of arms made of alternating red and yellow lozenges. It is known that several knights from Angoumois, Saintonge and Poitou helped the Spanish kings during the Reconquista, and brought back the so-called mudejar architectural style, whereby elements of Moresque origin were incorporated to the local Romanesque churches, making them very specific.
