Symbols of Zurgena

The flag and arms of Zurgena, adopted on 14 March 1992 by the Municipal Council and revised on 21 February 1994, as suggested on 27 February 2003 by the Royal Academy of History, are prescribed by Decree No. 247, adopted on 10 October 1995 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 14 December 1995 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 158, p. 11,653 (text). This was confirmed by a Decree adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 1:2, tierced at hoist [1:2], the smallest, blue part, charged with a golden yellow castle, the biggest, golden yellow part at fly.
Coat of arms: Quarterly, 1. Or a double-headed eagle sable, 2. Azure a castle or on waves, 3. Or three nettles issuant from three mounds on waves, 4. Argent a lion purpure. Grafted in base gules a fleur-de-lis or. The shield surmounted by a Royal Spanish crown.

The coat of arms includes a castle and a lion, recalling that Zurgena belonged to the Kingdom of Castile and León at the time of the Reconquest. The other elements of the arms are references ot the subsequent history of the town. The double-headed eagle recalls that Zurlega was a realengo depending on Vera. The nettles, arms of Fajardo, evoke the transfer of the town to the Marquisate of Los Vélez in the 17th century. The fleur-de-lis alludes to the house of Medina Sidonia, once lords of Zurgena. The waves represent river Almanzora.
