Symbols of Somontín

The flag and arms of Somontín, adopted on 13 November 1997 by the Municipal Council and revised on 5 April 1999, as suggested on 19 November 1998 by the Royal Academy of Cordóba, are prescribed by Decree No. 2, adopted on 10 January 2000 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 10 February 2000 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 17, pp. 1,755-1,756 (text). This was confirmed by a Decree adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).

The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular flag, in proportions 11:18, celestial blue. In the center of the flag is placed the local coat of arms.
Coat of arms: Azure a mount argent issuant from waves argent and azure charged with a hammer and a pickaxe azure crossed per saltire, in chief three olive tree flowers argent with pistils gules per fess. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The mount refers to the location of the village at the foot of a mountain and to the Latin origin of the toponym (sub montanis). The tools symbolize the talc mines that were closed in the 1970s but have left significant remains in the economy, the memory and the landscape. The flowers allude to the resources in olive trees.
