The municipality of Rioja (1,397 inhabitants in 2013; 3,600 ha; municipal website) is located 15 km north of Almería.
Klaus-Michael Schneider, 6 November 2012The flag (photo, Town Hall) and arms of Rioja, adopted on 22 December 1998 by the Municipal Council, are prescribed by Decree No. 239, adopted on 13 December 1999 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 20 January 2000 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 7, p. 689 (text). This was confirmed by a Resolution adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:
Flag: Rectangular flag, in proportions 1:1.5, made of three horizontal stripes, blue, orange and blue, the orange stripe being twice higher than the blue stripes. In the center of the flag, on the orange stripe, is placed the municipal coat of arms, in which the or and argent tinctures are replaced by the yellow and white colours, respectively.
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1. Or a water spring azure forming two flows surronded by two orange trees eradicated vert fructed or, 2. Azure over waves argent and azure a four-arched bridge or masoned sable. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.
Oranges are the main source of income in the municipality. The spring represents the significance of medicinal water, especially the Alfaro spa. The Rioja bridge crosses river Andarax.
