The municipality of Laujar de Andarax (1,671 inhabitants in 2013; 9,200 ha; municipal website) is located in the fertile valley of river Andarax, between the Sierra Nevada
and the Gádor mountains, near the source of Andarax, 70 km north-west of Almería.
The name of the place is derived from the Arab words el auxor (Laujar), which means "a cave in the
mountain", and andarax / andaraj, which means "a place to live", which, for the Arabs, required water, plant coverage and grubbing of the wilderness.

The (unofficial) flag of Laujar de Andarax is in proportions 2:3, red with a blue wavy bend fimbriated white. The municipal coat of arms, also fimbriated white, is placed in the middle of the flag, having nearly the total height of the panel. Beneath the shield is a white scroll bearing the name of the municipality in black capital letters.
The coat of arms of Laujar de Andarax is "Gules three fesses wavy azure in chief a sailing ship proper in base a three-turreted tower proper [brown] port and windows sable and masoned of the same standing on waves azure and argent. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed".
