Symbols of Fondón

The flag and arms of Fondón, adopted on 25 November 1992 by the Municipal Council and revised on 1 April 1995, as suggested on 24 June 1994 by the Royal Academy of History, are prescribed by Decree No. 368, adopted on 29 July 1996 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 29 August 1996 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 99, pp. 10,994-10,995 (text). This was confirmed by a Decree adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular flag of white colour, in length twice the width, charged in the middle with the municipal coat of arms.
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1. Argent [very light gray] a holly oak proper [plain green on the flag], 2a. Gules three keys argent placed 2 and 1, 2b. Wavy argent [very light gray] and azure [light blue]. The shield surmounted by a Royal Spanish crown.

The holly oak represents the place known as the Holly Oak's Peace, where, according to the tradition, peace was signed with the revolted Moriscos of the Alpujarras. The three quarters represent the three settlements (Fondón, Benecid and Fuente Victoria) forming the municipality: the key represents Benacid while the waves argent represent Fuente Victoria.

The flag in actual use is in proportions 2:3, with the coat of arms having nearly the total height of the panel.
