Introduction

* Editorial note: The Moroccan government considers Western Sahara as a part of its own territory. This page does not necessarily imply any partiality on the territorial issue in question, as also doesn’t the existence of our page about the flags of Moroccan administrative divisions, among which Western Sahara is included.

Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic subdivisions

The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic controls the inland, eastern parts of Western Sahara, east of the Moroccan Wall.

In the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic's administrative system, a subdivision at the state/province level is referred to as a wilaya, and the next level is called a daira. There are four wilayat:

  • Aousserd
    • Agounit
    • Bir Gandus
    • La Güera
    • Mijek
    • Tichla
    • Zug
  • Dakhla
    • Ain Beida
    • Bir Anzarane
    • Bojador
    • El Argoub
    • Gleibat El Foula
    • Jraifia
    • Oum Dreyga
  • El Aaiún
    • Bucraa
    • Daoura
    • Dcheira
    • Guelta Zemmur
    • El Hagounia
  • Smara
    • Al Mahbes
    • Amgala
    • Bir Lehlou
    • Farsia
    • Haouza
    • Jdiriya
    • Tifariti

These wilayat are named after the notional capitals, although in most cases the capital is within the Moroccan-held zones. Within these wilayat are 25 districts (daira), also listed above.

Moroccan subdivisions

Under Moroccan control are three Moroccan regions at least partly in Western Sahara. These regions notionally extend to the eastern border of Western Sahara, but are under SADR control in the east sections:

  • Guelmim-Oued Noun Region (extending north into Morocco)
    • Assa-Zag Province
  • Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra Region
  • Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab Region
    • Aousserd Province
    • Oued Eddahab Province

These three regions are subdivided into 7 provinces, also listed above. Eastern parts of these regions are under control of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
