NOTE: The only governorate in Egypt to be named for a calendar date.
On
October 6, 1973, Egypt started the October War against Israel (their Yom Kippur
War) with the surprising forcing of the Suez Canal and the subsequent overrun of
the Israeli fortifications on the east side of the Suez Canal (Bar-Lev Line),
initially successfully. Although there was a military truce on October 25, 1973,
at the end of the war, the myth of the invincibility of the Israeli army was
shattered.
Established: April 18, 2008, on the basis of presidential decree 114/2008,
formed from the northern part of the al-Jizah Governorate, dissolved again by
the prime minister on April 14, 2011, and reorganized into al-Jizah governorate.

The flag and coat of arms show
eight green, curved, upwardly tapering strips of different lengths, which lead
from the base to the sun. Since this governorate was also in a
development area, this symbolism is intended to illustrate the economic upswing,
especially in agriculture. After the dissolution of the Governorate as-Sadis min
Uktubar, the symbols were abandoned. The former capital has different symbols of
its own.
