On a blue shield, a silver masonry castle wall projecting from the right and terminating in a tower with a red roof; above the wall, two silver swords are crossed.
The current coat of arms of Ida-Viru County is derived from the coat of arms of Viru County. Viru County first received a coat of arms in 1928, and the original design remained in use until 1937. The coat of arms was largely similar to the current one, differing only in the shape of the tower spire and the swords.
The castle and wall depicted on the coat of arms are interpreted as a defense against enemies from the East, intended to safeguard the region's culture and freedom.
