The canton of Atahualpa was formed on 25 April 1984 and named
after the 13th and last last Inca emperor (c. 1502-1533).

The flag is made of three equal horizontal stripes, red on top,
blue on bottom and green in the middle, charged with two white
five-pointed stars meaning and symbolizing the canton's unity*
[The canton of Atahualpa was originally made by the merging of
the two parishes of Paccha and Ayapamba, I.S].
Red, as also used on the coat of arms, represents the civic
fervor setting ablaze the hearts of the inhabitants and their
empowerment in the struggle for noble causes. Green represents
the greenness of the fields and the noble hope of the inhabitants
to achieve their better realizations, like the firm preservation
of the liberty cause. Blue reflects the sky and the rivers
