San José de Bachillero emerged in 1850 as a small hamlet depending on Tosagua.
The village was built on plots offered by Santiago Vera Álava and Juan Marcillo.
Originally known as Catarama, the local name of a spiny plant common in the
area, the village was renamed to Bachillero; at the time, it was surrounded by
swamps known as "baches". The village was subsequently placed under the
protection of St. Joseph, the first mass being celebrated on 19 March 1889 by
José Vicente Loor.
The parish of San José de Bachillero was established on 28
May 1944 and inaugurated on 10 August 1945.

The flag of San José de Bachillero is diagonally divided. The upper part is
green, representing the inhabitants' aspiration and the soil fertility; the
lower part is white, symbolizing united peace and love.
In the center is
placed the parish's coat of arms.
