The parish of Achupallas (12,861 inhabitants; 10,120 ha) is named for a
native tribe listed by Father Juan de Velasco (1789) as one of those living in
Alausi. The historian also reports the battle of Achupallas, fought in 1487,
which allowed Inca Huayna Cápac to defeat Scyri Caccha XV and to conquer the
kingdom of Quito.
The parish of Achupallas was established in April 1897.

The flag of Achupallas is horizontally divided white-green with the parish's
coat of arms in the center.
Green is a symbol of hope; it also represents
lakes Ozogoche, Paila Cocha, Mangan Cocha, Mapaguiña, Pichagua, Yanacocha, Juna
Cocga and others, which reflect the beauty of the natural environment. White is
a symbol of the purity of the inhabitants and of the national anthem that
relates the Achupallas peace song.
