The municipality was formed on 20 September 1996. The page at Consejo
Provincial del Cañar site contains also a black ans white
photograph of the first native Mayor of the town, Pr. Abelina
Morocho Pinguil. The flag behind her left shoulder seems to be
the municipal flag, without trace of a coat of arms.
