The parish of Chitán de Navarretes was established on 11 February 1963 as
part of Montúfar (Carchi).
Chitán is named for a local word meaning either "a
height" or "surrounded by rivers". Navarretes is the incorrect form of Navarette,
the family that offered the plot to establish the parish.
