After the devastations caused by the Thirty Years War King Christian 4 realised the necessity of building a strong fortress in Jutland
and planned a new city. This was completed by his successor King Frederik 3, who granted city rights on 15 December 1650.
He had also been the name giver of the city.
On every 6 July the city holds a festival to commemorate the 1849 Battle of Fredericia, fought during the 1st War of Schleswig,
in which Danish troops won a victory over the Schleswig-Holstein rebels, who were laying siege to the city.

It is a rectangular national flag (Danish: stutflag) with a yellow inscription "Fredericia" (1st line) "Kommune" (2nd line) in canton under the city arms.
It is used exclusively in the boardroom of the town hall.

Shield Or a lion rampant Gules crowned Or, holding a scimitar Argent in fess by his dexter forepaw and a laurel branch Vert in pale by his sinister forepaw.
Meaning:
Fredericia was founded in 1650 as Frederiksodde as a fortress. It was renamed in 1664. A seal with the coat of arms (the lion) is known by a document of 1655.
A new silver seal, with the coat of arms engraved, was ordered by the city council in 1664.
Its motto was "Pro pace armatus", (= armed for peace), which also explains the laurel branch.
The basic tinctures are those of the Oldenburg kin, the royal family of Denmark. After 2007 the municipality used a logo based on the arms.
