Introduction of Aabenraa Municipality

Aabenraa gained city rights at least in 1335, perhaps already in 1284. The city nearly always belonged to the ducal portions of Schleswig-Holstein during the partitions in 1490, 1544 and 1581. It was ruled by the Dukes of Gottorf. It became a part of Prussia in 1867, of Germany in 1871 and finally of Denmark in 1920. Middle Low German hd been the lingua franca under the local merchants, and thus the German name Apenrade prevailed since the 14th century. The German suffix "-rade" refers to forest clearance while the Danish word "å" stands for a little river or creek. The "å" was changed to "aa" in 1948.

The arms were officially approved for the city in 1922 without the barrulets wavy and, and as logo for the municipality (kommune) in 2007. The general design varied during the centuries on seals and arms. The shield had been plain blue or parted by all kinds of white barrulets.
