Viborg is both a city in central Jutland, Denmark, and the former capital of
Viborg County and currently the capital of Region Midtjylland (English: Region
Central Denmark) after the Kommunalreformen (English: Local government Reform
(of 2007) (https://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strukturreformen).
Viborg Amt (English: Viborg County) existed from April 1, 1970 and was
abolished on January 1, 2007, when most of it merged into Region Midtjylland . A
smaller portion merged into Region Nordjylland (Region North Jutland).
Viborg (municipality) was merged with Bjerringbro, Fjends, Karup, Møldrup and
Tjele to form an enlarged Viborg municipality.
It traces its roots as
early as the late VIIIth century.

The shield on the logo is derived from the coat of arms of the old
municipality of Viborg, which itself reproduces the medieval seal of the town.
The oldest imprint of the seal is dated 13 June 1355. From stylistic analysis,
heraldists believe that the seal was originally designed in 1235-1245. The
medievalist Erik Levin Nielsen claims that Bishop Gunner (1152-1251) contributed
to the design of the seal.
The Viborg seal, measuring 77 mm in diameter, is
one of the largest Danish seals. It features an elder and a younger councillors
from the Town Senate sitting on a bench at the entrance of Viborg cathedral. The
scene symbolizes transmission of knowledge and experience from a generation to
the next one. The bench has also be interpreted as the coffer in which the
town's official documents were kept, here a symbol of management.
The border
of the seal is inscribed with "SIGILLVM SENATORVM WIBERGIENSIS CIVITATIS", Latin
for "The Seal of the Senate of the Town of Viborg".
The modern rendition of
the arms is credited to the artist Mogens Ziegler.
