Deutscher Segler Verband (DSV)

Introduction

Deutscher Segler Verband (German Sailing Federation) was founded in 1888 in Hamburg in the boat house of Norddeutscher Regattaverein. The founder memebrs had been the following clubs:
1) Norddeutscher Regatta Verein
2)
Kaiserlicher Yacht-Club
3) Verein Seglerhaus am Wannsee
4)
Segel Club Rhe Königsberg
5) Berliner Segel-Club
6) Berliner Regatta-Verein
7) Akademischer Segler-Verein zu Berlin
8) Spandauer Yacht-Club
9) Hamburger Elbsegel Regatta Verein
10) St. Georger Segelverein
Sailing in the DSV had been a mere upper class sport, because the clubs were only allowed to include members, who needed not earn their living by manual labour (the so called "amateur paragraph"). As a result members of the working class were excluded.
During the rule of the NSDAP Deutscher Segler Verband (DSV) was synchronised in 1933 with the National Socialist League of the Reich for Physical Exercise (German: Nationalsozialistischer Reichsbund für Leibesübungen NSRL) and was brought into line due to the complete Nazification of state and society, especially also sports, euphemistically also called "co-ordination" or "consolidation of institutional powers" (German: Gleichschaltung). Most German sports umbrella organisations were transformed to departments (German: Fachämter) of the League.
The federation survived, but off course under control of the party within the framework of the League, and absorbed the two other existing associations of sailing in Germany Freier Segler Verband (1901 - 1933) and Deutscher Segler Bund (1912 - 1934) and was the only remaining umbrella organisation for sailing until 1945 and again since 1991, when the Bund Deutscher Segler der DDR (1960 - 1991) was unified with the federation.
Nowadays the federation has nearly 190,000 memebers, organised in 1200 sailing clubs.

Cruiser Section

The Cruiser Section is a department of the DSV, focussing on cruising, and was established in 1911 in Berlin by 56 yachtsmen. The current seat is Hamburg. The section currently (2019) has about 17,500 members, as about 3,500 members changed to the Kreuzer Yacht Club Deutschland since 1998.
Quoting the English page of the federation website:
"The Deutscher Kreuzer-Yacht-Verband (German Cruiser Yacht  Association) was founded in 1911 and became the cruiser section of the Deutscher Segler-Verband (DSV), the German Sailing Federation, in 1917. We are the largest association of yachtsmen and motorboat owners and enthusiasts in Germany. We have circa 21,000 members – yachtsmen and women and motorboat owners - and together we represent the interests of water sports enthusiasts on the sea, at the coast and on inland waters."

Club der Kreuzer Abteilung (CKA)

As neither the German Sailing Federation nor its Cruiser Section had single persons as members, the section established the Club of the Cruiser Section (German: Club der Kreuzer Abteilung / CKA), a sailing club, which could include also single persons as members. The club was established in 1971. Their members had been indirectly also members of the section. More important is that they were allowed to use the section's facilities. Before single members had to become members of another sailing club. This caused displeasure by many of them, as many clubs had their focus clearly on regatta sailing.
The members of the club are allowed to hoist a pennant version of the section's flag.
It is a white pennant (burgee), divided by a black saltire, fimbriated red. Its centre is superimposed by a golden oval, fimbriated black, with a black anchor and rope inside.
