Introduction

The club is based in Starnberg. The club was established as Segler-Verein Würmsee on 18 August 1888. The target had been to unite all yachtsmen around the Würmsee (old name of nowadays Starnberger See until 1961, Würm is a little river). Regattas had been made already since 1885 on the lake. A yacht harbour opened in 1892. In 1893 the club gained the status of an a.V. ("anerkannter Verein", similar to nowadays e.V.). The club was renamed to Bayerischer Yacht-Club on 18 March 1909. HRH Prince Ludwig of Bayern and HRH Prince Franz of Bayern became commodore and vice commodore of the club. Since 1911 the club gained the privilege, to call itself Königlich Bayerischer Yachtclub (= Royal Bavarian Yacht Club). Due to enforcement of the government of the Volksstaat Bayern (People's State of Bavaria) on 23 May 1919 the attribute "royal" was omitted, but re-installed in 1921 and finally abolished between 1933 and 1936 (no date mentioned in source).
