Shield parted per fess, above parted per pale, at dexter Gules a wheel Argent, at sinister parted per fess of Sable and Argent, charged with two swords Gules crossed in saltire, beneath Azure a lion rampant barry of nine of Argent and Gules.
Meaning:
Treffurt means "three fords", referring to a road, crossing the Werra River. The Lords of Treffurt acted as commissionaires of the Landgraves of Thüringen, but declined later to infamous robber knights. Their lordship finally was conquered by an alliance of the Landgraves of Thüringen and Hessen and the Archbishoric of Mainz. The lordship had been a condominion since then. Th archbishopric acquired the portion of Hessen in 1736, both areas became a dominion of Prussia in 1802 and of the Kingdom of Westphalia, a short living French puppet state, in 1807. In 1815 Treffurt was acquired completely by Prussia. The status of a condominion turned out unflattering for the city, as there was only little cooperation between the three parts.
The arms are stressing the status of the city as a condominion of the Wettin kin as Landgraves of Thüringen above left, the Archbishops of Mainz above right and the Landgraves of Hessen below. The 2nd quarter displayed the black lion of the Margraves of Meißen in a golden field at least until 1730 and was replaced by the arms of the Electorate of Sachsen, also belonging to the Wettin kin, later.
