Baroque shield Sable a lion rampant Or armed and tongued Gules.
Meaning:
Around 1200 a village developed, which was later denoted as the old city. The city with the privileges of city rights according to the pattern of Zwickau was established around 1290 by the Reeves of Plauen, who also established a mint. The city was completely fortified until the middle of the 14th century. The local parish church, dedicated to St. Michael, belonged to the Bishopric of Regensburg and was donated to the Teutonic Order in 1289. The order established a local commandery, which was first mentioned in 1328. The city was ruled by the Margraves of Meißen since 1357, by the Electors of Sachsen since 1485, by the Reeves of Plauen in 1569 and again by the Electors of Sachsen since 1569. In 1544 the city council bought the estates of the Teutonic Order. The arms of the reeves are in use since the 14th century.
