Description of banner:
It is a red - yellow - red vertical triband with ratio 1:3:1. The coat of arms is in the yellow stripe, shifted to the top and flanked by a black inscription "Stadt"(above) and "Selm" below.

Description of coat of arms:
In a red field is a golden (=yellow) rooted linden tree. The golden (=yellow) chief is superimposed by three red, heraldic roses, seeded golden(=yellow) and barbed green. They are ordered horizontally.
Meaning:
According to source the colours red and yellow are those of the archbishopric of Münster. The tree, a venue, is symbolizing the seat of the vehmgericht of the free county of Wesenfort. The roses had been taken from the arms of former Amt Bork, which had been incorporated into the city.
