Sömmerda Coat of Arms

Shield parted per fess, above Argent a demi-eagle issuant Sable, beneath Gules a 6-spokes wheel Argent.
Meaning:
In 1268 the Counts of Hohnstein gained Sömmerda as a fiefdom of the Fulda Imperial Abbey. Since 1342 it was ruled by the Counts of Schwarzburg, who had been also local village mayors since 1394. In 1418 the village was sold to the city of Erfurt. In 1665 it was acquired by the Archbishopric of Mainz and finally in 1802 by the Kingdom of Preußen. The Upper City around the church of St. Peter was extended by the Lower City around the church of St. Boniface in the 14th century. In 1459 Sömmerda was called a market town, in 1523 it was fortified. The oldest seal from 1369 displayed the lion of the Schwarzburg kin. Also the black eagle had been a heraldic animal of that kin. Sometimes he was displayed with a red tongue. The name of the village in those times had been Großsömmern. The wheel of Mainz was added in 1665, when the city became a possession of the archbishopric. In 1965 the arms were changed. On a white shield a sinister facing black eagle held a red wheel by his claws. The former arms were restored in 1986.
