Leuna Coat of Arms

Shield Argent, a chimney Gules masoned Sable, flanked by two triplets of 6-point stars Vert ordered per pale, base Vert masoned Sable and charged with a plough share Argent.
Meaning:
The chimney is symbolising industries, as Leuna had been a big industrial complex since 1917, belonging to BASF, since 1926 to IG Farben. It became the most important location for the production of fuel, made from coal. In the end of 1944 there had been 27,000 workers, among those about 16,000 foreigners and POWs. It remained an important base for the chemical industry of the GDR, then being VEB Leuna. Thus it gained city rights on 1 November 1945, immediately after WW2. The plough share is symbolising agriculture as former important business line. The stars are representing the former villages Leuna(proper), Ockendorf, Rössen, Göhlitzsch, Daspig and Cröllwitz.
There had been arms before since about 1930, which depicted in a white shield only black charges: an industrial complex with many smoking chimneys and a complete plough in base. These arms symbolised, as the current version, the turnover from a rural area to an industrial complex. Those arms were slightly changed in 1931, 1945 and 1990 and finally abolished on 12 January 1995.
