Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided by a bend formed by alternating blue and silver (=white) triangles. Above in a golden (=yellow) field are crossed, black hammer and mallet. Below in a black field is a golden (=yellow) oak leaf.
Meaning:
According to source the municipality gained the rights of a city in 1953. The bend is taken from the arms of the kin of Oer, who gave its name to the former municpality of Oer. Hammer and mallet are symbolizing mining and the leaf agriculture and forestry.

The coat of arms was approved by Oberpräsident of Prussian province of Westphalia on 7 September 1937. The banner is mentioned as a flag in §2(3) of Hauptsatzung of the city of Oer-Erkenschwick, version 6 April 2000.
