Description of coat of arms:
The silver(=white) shield is divided by a black cross, which is superimposed by a golden(=yellow), upright key.
Meaning:
According to source the arms are a modification of those of the archbishopric and electorate of Köln, who had been rulers in Vest Recklinghausen, to which the city belonged. The key as a distinguishing mark is an attribute of St.Peter, the patron of the electorate.

According to source the banner is mentioned as "flag" in Hauptsatzung of the city of Dorsten, dated 9 May 1995; §2(3), the arms are denoted as "traditional" and probably never had been approved officially.
