Shield Argent an ancient ship Azure with sail, charged with a fleur-de-lis Or, and pennant of the same sailing on a base of waves of the same.
Meaning:
Wehlen had been seat of a lordship and was owned alternately by the Kingdom of Böhmen or the Margraviate of Meißen. It was finally acquired for the margraviate by Margrave Heinrich III the Illustrious of Meißen as a donation of his father in law King Wenzel I of Böhmen. A local castle was first mentioned in 1269, which decayed since 1543. Wehlen was called a city in 1346. It had been the smallest city of Sachsen. The main business lines had been shipping and quarrying. The prefix "Stadt" was added in order to distinguish the city from the namesake village. As a curiosity sail and pennant are blown in different directions by the wind, probably an error of the man, who made the seal. The arms are symbolising shipping on the Elbe River. The fleur-de-lis is taken from the family arms of the Köckeritz kin, which displayed three lilies.
