Meaning:
Pirna Castle was first mentioned in 1269. It had been a base of the Kingdom of Böhmen before since the 11th century. Pirna is the seat of Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge County. The area was acquired by the Margraves of Meißen, who founded a settlement, which was first mentioned in 1231 and called a city in 1291. In the late Medieval Pirna had been an important trading post between Sachsen and Böhmen. The city flourished during the 15th century. The city had been manorial lord of three surrounding villages. Shipping and a hammer mill had been the most important business lines besides the numerous clothiers, having 47 master craftsmen in 1500. In 1629 more than 2000 refugees form Böhmen settled down in the city. In 1639 the city was besieged and looted by Swedish troops. A local seal under a charter signed on 8 September 1299 already displayed the punning pear tree. The black lion of the Margraviate of Meißen was added in 1408. The arms from 1549 displayed the current pattern with red lions, topped by a helmet crested with a pear tree with golden pears. Before 1989 the trunk of the tree had also been green.
