Shield parted per pale; at dexter Gules, a sinister facing sighthound rampant Argent, tongued Gules and collared Or, at sinister chequered of Azure and Argent.
Meaning:
A castle was first mentioned in 1302. The Lordship of Vetschau probably existed since around 1200. The region became a dominion of the Electorate of Saxony in 1635 and of Prussia in 1815. The village gained city rights in 1548. It had been a Sorbian city, but since the 17th century many Germans settled down in the city. Eustace of Schlieben bought the village in 1540 and uprgraded it to a city. Already the oldest city seal from 1559 displayed the current arms. The sinister half displays the family arms of the Schlieben kin.
