Shield quartered; 1st quarter Or a lion rampant Sable, armed an langued Gules; 2nd quarter parted per pale, at dexter chevronny of four of Gules and Argent, at sinister Argent a pair of shearer's scissors Sable; 3rd quarter parted per fess, above parted per pale of SArgent and Gules, below Azure; 4th quarter barry of ten of Sable and Or charged with a crancelin Vert.
Meaning:
The arms combine elements from the arms of the territories to which the district historically belonged: the lion of the Margraves of Meißen, the arms of the Lords of Sonneberg in the second quarter, in the third quarter the arms of the Counts of Schaumberg-Rauenstein and in the fourth quarter the arms of Saxony.
