The coat of arms was a modified version of the coat of arms of the free state of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the Latin cross was however replaced by a Maltese cross. The county arms were approved by minister of interior of Mecklenburg-Westpomerania on 27 February 1996, published in the roll of arms of Mecklenburg-Westpomerania as no. 0098.
