Moormerland Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a silver (= white) shield is a blue ship, flanked above by two red, embattled towers masoned black. Two blue barrulets wavy are dividing the chief.
Meaning:
The waves on the base are representing the former municipality of Oldersum and are symbolizing the location near river Ems. The ship (local term: Tjalk) is representing the former municipality of Warsingsfehn and is symbolizing the digging of peat, shipping and trading on the channels (Fehnkanäle). The towers are representing the former municipality of Neermoor and are reminding on a former castle located in Neermoor. Another interpretation says, they are representing both, Neermoor and Oldersum, who had had a castle each. The arms were designed by Ebo Pannenborg, a heraldrist from nearby Leer.
