Shield Argent, issuant from base an embattled tower Azure with open gate and cone roof Gules, topped by a ball Or and superimposed by an inescutcheon Argent, charged with a witch Gules, riding on a brush of the same.
Meaning:
The former arms, confirmed by the city council in 1953, displayed minor differences. The ball on top was Gules and the inescutcheon was charged with a quarter cogwheel Gules, flanked by a hammer Sable in dexter chief and a fir issuant Vert in sinister base. The tower is referring to the former Thale Castle of the local Lords of Dale. It was built in the 10th century and destroyed in 1365. Cogwheel and hammer were symbolising the local ironmongery, the fir was symbolising the local landscape on the slopes of the Harz. The witch in the nowadays arms is referring to the nearby "dance floor of witches". Due to urban legends all witches meet on this place in the night of the 30 April and of the 31 October, the latter also known as Halloween.
