It is a red-white-red vertical triband with ratio of stripes approx. 1:4:1. The coat of arms is shifted to the top within the central stripe.

The municipality flags are shown mostly in banner form in Hesse.

Shield parted by a bend wavy Argent, above left Gules an embattled tower Or, beneath left Sable a 6-point star Argent.
Meaning:
The tower is symbolising Schönstein castle in the municipality. The bend is rpresenting local Gilsa river, after which the municipality is named. The star is referring to the Counts of Ziegenhain, the former rulers.
The arms were approved on 27 February 1984.
