Description of banner:
The banner is vertically divided green - yellow - green with ratio 1:3:1. The coat of arms is in the yellow stripe shifted to the top.
Description of coat of arms:
The shield is quarterly divided. The 1st and the 4th quarter show a silver(=white) oak tree in a green field, the other quarters show a green oak tree in a silver(=white) field. Each oak tree has two golden(=yellow) acorns. In the centre of the shield is a plain golden(=yellow) inescutcheon.
Meaning:
According to Veddeler 2003, p.p.231 the former municipality and the Amt Verl both had quarterly divided shields with four oak trees. Both arms had been granted on 24 June 1938. The only difference between both arms was an inescutcheon in the centre of the arms of the Amt, showing five lozenges ordered 2:1:2 in a golden shield. The lozenges were symbolizing the former municipalities of Verl, Bornholte, Sende, Liemke and Osterwiehe. When the Amt was dissolved and the municipalities lost their independence, the lozenges had been removed. The former name "Verlo" is said to have the meaning "four forests". Each oak tree therefore is symbolizing one of the forests.
Flag, banner and coat of arms were approved by Regierungspräsident Detmold on 31 January 1972.
