It is a yellow-green-yellow vertical triband in proportions 1:2:1 with the arms. The arms are sometimes placed in the upper third of the flag.

Shield parted per pale; at dexter Sable a lion rampant Or, crowned, armed and tongued Gules; at sinister Argent a crane Or, base parted per fess of Sable and Or a crancelin Vert.
Meaning:
The golden lion and the crane are derived from the arms of the Lords of Reuß, who ruled the largest part of the district for many centuries. A small part of the district belonged to one of the Saxon Duchies, hence the base of shows a simplified version of the arms of Sachsen.
